Yellow Balau, also known as Bangkirai or Shorea laevis, is a durable and stable hardwood timber primarily sourced from Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia and Indonesia. It's a popular choice for outdoor applications, particularly decking, in the UK due to its strength, longevity, and natural resistance to decay, insects, and harsh weather conditions. It is smooth on one face and grooved on the reverse.
It's a very dense and heavy timber, with strength properties similar to Greenheart. Its density makes it resistant to warping and cracking. The Janka hardness rating of Balau is 1,600 lbf (7,120 N), making it harder than Oak.
Yellow Balau exhibits warm golden-brown hues, sometimes with a reddish tint. If left untreated, it naturally weathers to a silver-grey patina over time.
